Oneonta Outlaws Player Signing #14: Matt Carrera - Sophomore - Middle-Infielder - Hudson Valley Community College - 5’6 170 Ib - Mount Sinai, NY

He’s backkkk! The Oneonta Outlaws are psyched to bring back sophomore middle-infielder Matt Carrera from the Hudson Valley Vikings for a second summer in 2025. In 2024, Carrera played in 22 games for Oneonta and finished the summer hitting .280 (21/75) with a pair of doubles, 9 runs batted in, 11 runs scored, 6 stolen bases, 10 walks, and 14 strikeouts. Matt had 5 multi-hit games, and 4 games in which he reached base three times, while serving as an on base machine at the top of our lineup. His best outings of the summer came in a 6-3 loss vs Mohawk Valley on 6/22 (2/4, R, RBI, BB) and a 6-5 loss @ Mohawk Valley on 7/18 (2/4, BB).

He is a big-time contact bat with a very patient approach and regularly works up pitchers counts, making them test the waters and show off their entire arsenal until he gets what he wants. This also gives each hitter behind him a chance to study what they’re seeing. Carrera also has a superior glove up the middle and was arguably the best defensive second basemen/shortstop in the entire PGCBL last summer. His positioning is always top notch and the way he stays on top of the ball while communicating with his fellow fielders just adds to his swagger and strong abilities up the middle.

Following his massive 2024 season for the Vikings in which he popped off for a .422 batting average and a .519 on-base percentage in 33 games, Carrera is on tap to ride past those numbers to new career highs this spring. Thus far in 29 games, he has a .429 average and a .504 on-base. He has already driven in more runs, cut down his strikeout number, and has found a bit more pop in his bat. Boasting a 29-2 record with just 10 more games to play before hitting the postseason, HVCC is in prime position to contend for some hardware this spring, and Matty C is right in the middle of it all.
